SEND at Home: A Guide for Parents and Carers

Across Chancery Education Trust, we are committed to ensuring that every child is supported to achieve their full potential. We recognise that children learn in different ways and at different rates, and that some pupils may require additional or different provision to help them succeed.

Our approach to SEND is rooted in inclusion, early identification, and strong partnerships with families and professionals.

What is SEND?

A child is considered to have Special Educational Needs or a Disability (SEND) if they have a learning difficulty or disability that requires additional support to access education. SEND may relate to one or more of the following areas:

• Communication and interaction
• Cognition and learning
• Social, emotional and mental health
• Sensory and/or physical needs

SEND can be short-term or long-term, and a child’s needs may change over time.

SEND Support

Most pupils with additional needs are supported through SEND Support within their school. This support follows a graduated approach:

• Assess – identifying strengths, needs and barriers to learning
• Plan – agreeing appropriate strategies and support
• Do – implementing the agreed provision
• Review – monitoring progress and adapting support as needed

SEND Support does not require a diagnosis or an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Many pupils receive SEND Support for a period of time and then no longer need additional provision.

More Complex SEND Needs

Some pupils have more complex or long-term needs that require enhanced support. In these cases:

• Schools work closely with parents and carers and external professionals (such as Educational Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, or Occupational Therapy)
• A request for an Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment may be made to the Local Authority
• If agreed, this may result in an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), which outlines the provision and outcomes required to support the pupil

Working in Partnership with Families

We strongly value collaboration with parents and carers. Families are involved throughout the process, including:

• Identifying concerns and celebrating strengths
• Planning, reviewing and adapting support
• Sharing progress and next steps
• Accessing advice, guidance and parental engagement opportunities

• Early identification and intervention
• Inclusive classroom practice
• High-quality teaching as the foundation for learning
• Regular monitoring of progress and wellbeing
• A consistent, child-centred approach to SEND

Each school within the Trust has a designated SEND lead who works closely with staff, families and external agencies to ensure appropriate provision is in place.
