Recapping on Phonics

At Chancery Education Trust, we continue to deliver phonics through a structured and consistent approach, helping children to develop their reading, spelling and writing skills with confidence. Phonics is taught daily, allowing children to practise recognising sounds, blending words and building fluency.

You can support your child at home by listening to them read regularly, encouraging them to sound out unfamiliar words, and revisiting the sounds they have learned in school. Short, daily practice can make a big difference. Reading together, sharing stories and making reading enjoyable will also help build confidence and a love of learning.

What is Phonics

Phonics is a method of teaching children to read and write by helping them understand the relationship between letters (graphemes) and the sounds (phonemes) they represent.

Children are taught to blend sounds together to read words (e.g. c-a-t → cat) and to segment words into individual sounds to spell them. They also learn common patterns, tricky words and how sounds can be represented in different ways.

Phonics is taught in a structured and progressive way, starting with simple sounds and building up to more complex words and sentences. This approach helps children develop confidence, fluency and independence in reading and writing, forming a strong foundation for all future learning.
